Nourishment and Creativity

As promised, I’m back to encourage every creative to take better care of themselves and their precious ability to create. This post has been delayed because I’ve had my OWN health struggles going on, so please, know that I come at this from a place of am there/been there/done that/then wrote a book. I’m not perfect, I’m not a health guru, but I do know that taking care of myself is key to being able to continue to create at a prolific rate.

This post is all about food.

None of it is new information. Think of this as a reminder. I know, I know. No one wants to talk about diet, really. We’ve ALL been there, done that, bought the t-shirt and promptly burned that fucker. But…..

It really does make a difference.

I know from personal experience that when I eat well, I am more motivated to write, and things just come easier. My mood is better, which in turn makes me want to create and allows me to do so with more ease. In looking into the science behind this, I found some articles on the link between diet and creativity, but they were mostly based on children. HOWEVER, what I found was tons of research and evidence proving what you probably know by now if you’ve ever done any research into diet.

Eating a diet that is low in refined sugars, simple carbs, saturated fats, and processed foods and that is rich in complex carbs, healthy fats, lean protein, and plenty of fruits and vegetables lowers inflammation in the body. Inflammation can have massive effects on not only how you feel in general and your propensity for developing a whole host of health conditions, it ALSO negatively affects brain function, including mood, cognition, and energy levels.

Can you see how all of that might impact your creativity?

Put another way, if you put trash fuel into your engine, it’s going to mess things up and leave you sputtering and missing. Put in quality fuel so you can keep things running smoothly.

And trust me, I KNOW how hard this is. As a writer who spends a lot of time sitting or standing in one place staring at a screen, I know exactly how easy it is to have sugary or carby/fatty snacks like candy or chips just sitting around where you can mindlessly munch on them while you work. That’s a habit I got rid of a while ago, but the urge is still there every once in a while. And I know that when you’re stressed about a deadline or a project’s success or you are navigating the world of social media and reviews and income, stress eating is a BIG temptation.

But do yourself a favor and pay a little more attention to how you’re treating your creative instrument (your mind and body) by trying to make some healthier choices. I promise you’ll see some results. They might be small things like a little extra energy or a smidge more clear-headed focus, but the longer you keep at it, the more the benefits grow.

It’s all stuff most of us already know, but I know I personally could use a reminder from time to time, so here’s the list of musts to keep you humming along and creating your best:

  • Hydrate. Drink water, low caffeine, decaf or herbal teas, etc. If you drink juice, make sure you limit it because it can have a lot of sugar and you’ve taken out all the fiber, so it will spike your blood sugar, then lead to a crash.
  • Limit or eliminate added sugar/refined sugar and simple carbs. Again, they can make your blood sugar spike, then fall, which leads to dips in energy, mood, and mental clarity.
  • Eat as many fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables as possible. This loads you up with fiber, vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants that will keep inflammation at bay.
  • Eat adequate protein. Opinions and studies vary when talking about how much protein is required for optimal function. But just choose lean proteins that are lower in saturated fats whenever possible and include some protein with every meal and you’re on the right track.
  • If you suspect you may have food allergies or sensitivities, try an elimination diet and/or work with your doctor to identify and eliminate these. It can have a massive impact on your cognitive function.
  • Take breaks from whatever creative endeavor you are working on to eat meals and snacks. Don’t fall prey to the temptation to eat while you work. Using mindfulness while eating can lower stress, help with digestion, and help you re-focus when you’re ready to get to work again.

I know it’s hard sometimes to do all the things that we need to do to keep ourselves healthy. It can seem like a lot to manage, especially in addition to our busy creative lives. But think of it as part of your creative work to take care of yourself. You want to use the best instruments and tools possible when you create, and your biggest asset and most important took is your mind and body.

Good luck!

Love,

Kaye

F is for Fairy Doctor, Flash Fiction

This flash fic bit originally appeared on my old blog, and was a post in the “Blogging A to Z challenge.” For the month of April, participants in the challenge write a post starting with that day’s letter (working sequentially through the alphabet.) For my theme in 2012, I chose fairies and mythological creatures.

*A Fairy doctor- is someone that has within them the ability to communicate with the fairy folk.  People would often enlist the help of a fairy doctor when they suspected they were having difficulties with their Good Neighbors.  The fairy doctor would tell them how to appease the fairies. (I’m not making this up. They really exist/existed…uh…the fairy doctors, I mean.)

I pulled up to the small farmhouse at noon on Sunday.  It was a charming little place, white with quaint green shutters.  The yard and driveway were lined with big, mature trees and rows of flowering bushes.  As I slid out of the car, a light breeze ruffled my hair, washing me in the scent of flowers and fresh cut grass. The whole place had a relaxing vibe, and I felt my shoulders drop and my breathing slow, despite my nervousness.

I braced myself and hiked my purse up on my shoulder, still feeling foolish about this whole endeavor.  Who in their right mind believed in fairies?  My feet crunched loudly on the gravel path as I made my way to the front door, my head turning to and fro as I took in the wealth of growing things lining the path.  I started up the front steps, pausing as a voice drifted on the wind.  I followed the soft song around the corner of the house to find a woman taking laundry off an old clothesline.

Her long, wavy silver hair drifted about her shoulders in the breeze and her song became a muffled hum as she stuffed a couple of wooden clothes pins in her mouth.  She deftly folded the shirt she had just taken off the line, and dropped it into a big wicker basket, before removing the clothespins from her mouth.  I cleared my throat to let her know I was there, and she turned to me with a warm smile.

“You must be Anna,” she said as she lifted the basket and headed my way.  “Let me just bring this in the house and I’ll get you some tea. Then you can tell me about your wee fairy problem.”

I didn’t say anything, just followed her up onto the porch.  She gestured to a table and chairs.  “If you’d like we can take our tea out on the porch.  It’s such a beautiful day.”

“That would be nice,” I said, dropping into a chair.

She was back a few minutes with an honest to God tea service, complete with a couple of big, lumpy scones. “Now then,” she said, taking a sip of her tea.  “What is it that’s bothering you?”

I cleared my throat nervously and stared into my teacup.  Was I really doing this?  A softly lined hand slipped into my line of sight, patting my hand familiarly where it rested, curled around my cup.  “I know it’s a pain, but we’ll get them sorted out and everything will be right as rain.”

I met her blueberry eyes.  “Do you really believe in fairies?”

She snorted and withdrew her hand.  “Dear, my family have been fairy doctors for ages.  I can’t blame people for not believing what they can’t see.  But I can see.  I have no excuse to play ignorant.”

I took a deep breath.  “I think there is something living in my house.  It… well I swear sometimes it folds my laundry.  I’ll find things put away in places where I wouldn’t have put them.  Mostly its harmless- even helpful.  But lately it’s like having an angry three year old in my house.  I find cupboards emptied, movies and books pulled off the shelves.  My house is a mess!”

She only smiled.  “It sounds like you have a house sprite.  They are incredibly beneficial and kind- you’re lucky to have them.”  She wagged a finger at me.  “But even they have their limits.  Have you been putting milk out for him? Or maybe bits of bread?”

I frowned and shook my head.  “What?”

“I’ll come and pay you a visit later this week. Once I know just what kind of sprite it is, we’ll know what it is that he wants.”  She shrugged.  “Then you can mend your relationship with him, and he’ll go back to tending your house.”

I shook my head.  A live-in maid that I couldn’t see all for the price of a bowl of milk?

Random Book Review – The Demon’s In the Details

I just finished The Demon’s In the Details by Meghan Maslow and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it.

Story time– I found this book via Facebook recommendation in one of the groups I follow. I looked into it and downloaded a sample for one reason: someone said the love interest is described as “a murder twink.”

I LOVE me some small, pretty, unassuming, could-kill-you-without-even-trying guys. AND I’ve read some of Maslow’s other books and enjoyed them. She has strong writing and a great sense of humor.

This particular story is a Rumpelstiltskin retelling. Not really one of my favorite fairytales, I’m not gonna lie, but Maslow took this story and completely redeemed it with her retelling. It stars a raven shifter and sometimes thief who is trying to protect his roost from an awful leader and the murder twink demon he is forced to ask for favors. It’s a bit mafia, a bit cheesy, a bit hilarious, and really steamy. If you’re into MM books, you have to check it out.

Random Book Review- The Path of Temptation Series

The Path of Temptation- Auryn Hadley

Guys…guys…THIS SERIES! I am eagerly awaiting the final book, but I can say this, even if the final book (by some weird, horrific plot twist) was utterly horrendous, I would still share this with everyone I know just based on the first five books….

  • Poly romance with actual relationship development
  • Amazing characters who change and grow as the story progresses
  • Ridiculously hot sex scenes
  • A rich world and plot outside the already rich relationship and character development
  • MF, MM, and some FF (and of course, all kinds of multiples)

When I started the first book, I was a little hesitant because the kids STAYED kids, rather than that just being a prologue and jumping ahead, but TRUST me on this, keep going. It’s all so good, and it DOES get really steamy. You need to watch these kids grow into these adults…it’s fucking brilliant.

And it’s moved me to swearing, so there you go. Clearly a must read.

Healthy Creative Intro

Hey there my lovely beasts! I am so excited to introduce a new project to you. I’ve been meaning/wanting/planning to dive into this for a loooong time now. But, as we do, I’ve put off this thing that means so much to me for far too long. I’ve finally given myself the kick in the ass I needed to start!

I firmly believe that our creativity is the most precious thing we possess—and I’m not just talking about writers, but ANY creator…and any HUMAN! The desire to create, to share, to learn and grow and to make our mark on the world (even if it’s a very small or very weird-ass mark) is innate in all of us. And it is absolutely critical for our survival.

SO, I am going to start sharing some info and tips here on the blog and on my social media pages to help encourage you, fellow creatives, to help you take care of yourselves so you can continue to put your own amazing mark on the world (or your own weird-ass mark, if you prefer…personally, I think that’s amazing too.)

Here’s  just a little something to chew on until I roll out more detailed stuff

If you are someone who relies on your creativity to earn a living, to support yourself, OR just to keep going for any number of reasons, you MUST understand one thing:

Your health and wellbeing (mental, emotional, AND physical) are your top priority starting today! If you aren’t feeling well, vibrant, and healthy, then I guarantee, you aren’t creating as much magic in the world as you could be. Even if you ARE putting out a lot of creative work, that still stands—think how much better/more creative/more genuine and empowered it could be if you were feeling good.

So that is your goal for the week! Go find out what you are neglecting in terms of taking care of yourself. And start doing it!

More to come soon!

I love you,

Kaye

Random Book Review – Love Language

Love Language- Reese Morrison

If you are looking for kinky MM contemporary that stands out from all the rest, here you go!

  • Deaf MC/ASL use
  • Age gap
  • Grieving the loss of a spouse
  • Reversed stereotypical “roles”
  • Kink well-explained/represented
  • MC who is trans
  • Slow build romance plot but still with lots of steamy scenes.

This book focuses heavily on character growth and relationship development, with a really cool way of portraying emotional honesty and characters who aren’t cardboard cutouts…which, you all know is my thing! And, hello, that cover!

Random Book Review – Mortal Magic: Stray

I have been in a reading slump for a while now. I’ve started several books and couldn’t finish them. I’m just so over the usual tropes in my favorite genres. I LOVE poly romance (straight, gay, or all of the above), but a lot of that falls into the reverse harem category and, sadly, the tropes I like least are the most popular there, so it takes a LOT of wading through unappealing books to find a winner. No offense to the authors who write in that genre, but seriously, I am so sick of fainting females, big hulking alpha males, and over-the-top insta-mates. I want variety. And I’m happy to report I finally found a book that held my interest! If you want a poly book that is a bit different from those around it, this is it!

I just finished Mortal Magic: Stray, by Jackbird Lee. It held my attention and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this story, and how much I’m looking forward to diving into the next book.

I almost tossed this book aside when I opened the sample and realized the book is written in third person present tense.  (LOL, it’s a big pet peeve of mine, I HATE present tense). BUT…the premise, world, and characters were unique enough that I decided to keep reading and see how it played out. I am so glad I did. The MC is neurodivergent, which is awesome to see, but it’s not spelled out in a big, obvious way. You kind of have to understand mental health and put the pieces together, which I think is perfect. The characters are unique, and uniquely flawed, and I enjoyed the worldbuilding and interpersonal interactions which are just portrayed differently when seen through the MC’s lens of how he understands (or doesn’t understand) the world.  I will definitely be reading the next book.

Random Book Review- Brimstone By Angel Martinez

It’s been a while, but after I DEVOURED this series, I felt compelled to share a random book review for the Brimstone Series by Angel Martinez!

Angels and Demons in space? A character that is 100% wicked chaotic good? Floating cows, talking pink hedgehogs, and characters with depth? What more do you need to know? Go read it.

Okay, fine, here’s another reason: it also contains an absolutely wonderful and refreshing poly/triad grouping that includes a trans character. What are you still doing here? Go, shoo. The first book is Potato Surprise. There are also several collections of side bits set in the universe, but I haven’t gotten to them yet–I had to read the main story to the end or die. It’s been a while since I found a book/series that was so much of everything I craved. Enjoy!
